Steam locomotives burn fuel such as coal or wood to boil water, and the steam pushes pistons that turn the wheels. The first public steam railway opened in England in 1825, and trains soon changed how people and goods moved everywhere. This collection is full of engines on the move. There is a big steam locomotive, a long locomotive, a classic side view and a front view, plus a passenger train and a freight train working its way uphill. Scenic pages send engines over a tall bridge arch, through a tunnel, along a mountain switchback and past a silo tower. A caboose puffs smoke at the end of the line, and a freight front shows off its cargo. Little kids can enjoy the cute and easy trains or a bouncing cartoon engine. Engines look great in black with red and gold trim, but brightly painted trains are fun too. Smoke and steam can stay white with soft gray shading. Train fans may like counting the wheels on each engine as they color.
