Pinecones are the seed holders of pine trees and other conifers. Each scale on a female cone protects seeds underneath, and in dry weather the scales open to let the seeds fall out, then close again when it is damp. The scales grow in two sets of spirals, and the numbers of spirals usually match the Fibonacci sequence found in sunflowers and seashells. Some pines, like the lodgepole pine, have cones sealed with resin that open only after the heat of a forest fire. This collection features pinecones from simple to detailed. A single pinecone stands upright, another hangs on a branch, one rests among long needles and an open cone shows its spiral scales. A patterned pinecone suits older kids, and an easy pinecone and two cute pinecone characters are made for toddlers. Squirrels appear too, one beside a cone and one hugging it, since squirrels love the seeds inside. Brown and tan scales with darker edges, plus green needles, look natural.
