Ants can carry objects many times their own body weight, and they live in organized colonies where workers, soldiers and a queen each have their own role. Some colonies hold millions of ants. Ants also leave scent trails called pheromones, which is how a line of ants can march straight to a crumb on the kitchen floor. This set turns tiny ants into big characters. An ant climbs a ladder, balances a ball, carries a crumb on a stick and stacks gifts. Others sit on an anthill, a leaf or a mushroom, peek out of a birdhouse and settle into a flower pot or a watering can. Every ant has three body sections, six legs and two antennae, so kids can count those parts as they color, a nice science bonus. Real ants are usually black, red or brown. The leaves, flowers and mushrooms around them are great places for bright greens, pinks and reds. These pages make a fun companion to watching a real ant trail outdoors.

Picking the right ant for a young colorer

The big-headed young ant has the largest shapes and suits ages 3 to 5. Cute Ant Character and Cute Ant add jointed legs, longer limbs and abdomen stripes, and Ant on Leaf adds a leaf to color. For a bug unit, children can count the legs on each ant, check that every one has six, and color the head, middle section and back section in three different shades to learn the body parts.

Garden and picnic ideas

Ant on Leaf is the natural pick for a garden theme, with a leaf big enough for several greens between its veins. Cute Ant and Cute Ant Character can be cut out and marched across a paper picnic blanket on a classroom wall. Children can also draw crumbs or a tiny leaf for each ant to carry, turning the page into a short story about an ant's busy day.
