The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States, and despite its name, it is not bald at all. Bald comes from an old word meaning white, describing its white head. Young bald eagles are mottled brown and do not get their white head and tail until they are about five years old. Eagles build some of the largest nests of any bird, adding to them year after year. This collection shows eagles at home and in flight. An eagle soars with wings spread, lands on a tall post and looks up toward the sky. Others perch on a branch, a mountain peak, a tall pine, a rocky cactus outcrop and a flagpole base. A head and chest portrait shows off the hooked beak, and one page shows an adult with a chick in a tall nest. Color the body dark brown, leave the head and tail white, and use yellow for the beak, eyes and feet. These pages fit Independence Day, nature studies and bird lessons.

Chubby cartoon or layered feathers

Cute Bald Eagle Character is the easiest, with a giant fluffy head and bold outlines for ages 4 to 7. Bald Eagle Flying and Bald Eagle on Branch are medium, with rows of flight feathers or a scalloped chest and branch, suited to ages 5 to 8. Cute Bald Eagle has the slimmest body and the most feather layers along its folded wings, making it the best pick for kids around 6 to 9 who like realistic birds.

Color it like the real bird

Real bald eagles are easy to color correctly, which makes this set a good nature lesson. Mature birds have a bright white head and tail, a dark brown body and wings, and yellow beaks, eyes and feet. Have kids color one page with these true colors, then look up a young eagle, which is mottled brown all over for its first few years, and color a second page that way to compare how the birds change as they grow.
