Chinchillas come from the high Andes mountains of South America, where cold nights call for serious warmth. They have the densest fur of any land mammal, with as many as 50 to 80 hairs growing from a single follicle. Because that fur is so thick, chinchillas do not bathe in water. Instead, they roll in fine volcanic dust that soaks up oils and keeps their coats clean. This collection shows chinchillas in cozy and silly scenes. One takes a dust bath, which is a fun fact kids love, and others sit on a fence post, a bookshelf and a mushroom tower. Chinchillas peek out of a birdhouse and a hanging basket and balance on stacks of balls and pumpkins. A baby chinchilla rounds out the set. Wild chinchillas are blue-gray with a pale belly, while pet chinchillas can also be white, beige, black or violet-gray. Big round ears and long whiskers are fun details. Soft gray strokes make the fur look plush.

Standing, sitting and bathing chinchillas

Cute Chinchilla Character and the young chinchilla are the simplest, with big ears and front-facing poses for ages 3 to 6. Cute Chinchilla adds fur strokes and a very bushy tail, and Chinchilla Dust Bath shows a real grooming habit. For a pet care lesson, talk about how chinchillas clean their thick fur by rolling in special dust instead of taking water baths.

Silver grays and soft pink ears

Chinchillas are most often silver gray with a white belly, so blending light and dark grays gives a soft, plush look. Pink inside the ears and on the nose adds warmth. On Chinchilla Dust Bath, light gray puffs and a sandy dish make the bath look real, and the bushy tail on Cute Chinchilla is a good place to layer two grays for texture.
