Cats were living alongside people at least 9,500 years ago, and ancient Egyptians honored them so highly that some were mummified. Today they are among the most popular pets in the world. A cat's whiskers are about as wide as its body, helping it judge whether it can squeeze through a gap, and its flexible spine lets it twist in midair to land on its feet. This set of cat pages captures classic cat behavior. One plays with a ball of yarn, one hugs a ball, another curls up asleep and one leaps straight up. Cats walk forward, take a step, stroll through the grass, stand on a rock, look up, sit beside a plant and wave a paw. There is a face close-up, a cat wearing a bow and a cat nibbling a cracker. Real cats can be tabby striped, solid black, orange, gray, white, calico or tuxedo, so kids can copy their own pet or a neighbor's. Short strokes in the direction of fur growth make the coat look soft.
